MINICAMP U-shaped body pillow with kapok and latex filling

Does Kapok Go Flat? How to Fluff, Adjust and Top Up a Kapok Body Pillow

After "which shape should I choose?", this is the question we hear most: will a kapok pillow go flat?

Honest answer: yes, a little. Every natural filling settles with use. That is not a defect, it is the trade you make for a pillow with no foam inside. The good news is that settling is almost always filling that has moved, not filling that has gone. And you can move it back in two minutes.

Here is what actually happens inside your pillow, and what to do about it.

Why a kapok pillow settles

Our pillows are filled with a 50/50 blend of kapok fibre and shredded natural latex. Kapok is light and silky, so on its own it compresses under weight. The latex is there to give the blend bounce, which is why it holds its shape far better than pure kapok.

What the blend can't stop is physics. You lie in the same position most nights, so your hips, knees and bump press on the same spots. Night after night, the filling drifts away from those spots and gathers at the ends. The pillow feels thinner exactly where you need it most.

So before you think about adding anything, put the filling back where it belongs.

The two-minute fluff

  1. Take off the outer cover. It is easier to feel where the filling has gathered through the inner case.
  2. Knead the thin spots. Squeeze and loosen any clumps with your hands, the way you would knead dough.
  3. Shake each section. Hold a U-shaped pillow by one end of a leg and shake so the filling travels back along it. Then do the other leg.
  4. Press and check. Lay it flat and press along the length. Where it still feels thin, knead once more.

Do it whenever the pillow starts to feel uneven.

On a dry day, airing the pillow by an open window helps too. Just keep the filling away from water: kapok clumps when wet and takes a long time to dry.

Make it softer or firmer with the zip

The inner case of every MINICAMP body pillow has a hidden zip (the kapok & latex ones actually have three!), so the firmness is yours to change.

  • Too firm? Open the zip and take out a handful or two. Keep what you remove in a sealed bag, so you can add it back later.
  • Too soft? Add filling back a handful at a time, shake, lie on it, and only then decide whether you need more.

Your body changes a lot through pregnancy and after it. It is worth adjusting the pillow as you go instead of putting up with a pillow that fitted you three months ago.

When fluffing isn't enough: top it up

After months of nightly use, even a well-fluffed pillow can feel a bit lower than on day one. That is the moment for a top-up rather than a new pillow.

Our Kapok & Latex Pillow Refill is the same 50/50 blend we fill our pillows with, in a 300 g bag. For scale, a U-shaped pillow with kapok & latex filling holds 5.9 kg, so one bag is a gentle top-up, not a refill from empty.

To add it, open the zip on the inner case, add a handful at a time and shake the pillow to spread it evenly. Add a little, try it, then add more if you want it firmer.

Keeping it fresh

  • Outer cover: removable and machine washable with a mild detergent, no bleach.
  • Inner pillow: spot clean only. Use a damp cloth and mild soap, then let it air dry completely before the cover goes back on. Never put the filled inner pillow in the washing machine.
  • Storage: your pillow arrives in a reusable vacuum bag. Keep it, it is the easiest way to store the pillow between pregnancies or when guests need the space.

Is kapok right for you, or PES?

If being able to wash the whole pillow matters more to you than a natural filling, or if you have a latex allergy, our PES filling is the better pick. We wrote a full comparison here: What is Kapok & Latex Blend Filling?

Quick answers

My new pillow looks flat straight out of the box. Is that normal?

Yes. Pillows travel compressed in a vacuum bag. Take it out, shake and knead it, and give it time (24-48 hours) to recover its shape.

Can I add refill to a pillow from another brand?

The refill suits any pillow or cushion with a zipped inner case. It is a natural match for pillows already filled with a kapok blend.

Does settling mean the filling is wearing out?

Usually not. In most cases the filling has simply moved. Fluff first, and top up only if the pillow still feels low afterwards.
